A Conversation with Chairperson Woods
WHY HAVE YOU CHOSEN TO SERVE ON THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES?
As a Morehouse alumnus, the College did so much to shape who I am today. Much of the success I have enjoyed as a business person and the desire to have an impact on the communities which I came from came through the teachings I received at Morehouse, both in and outside the classroom. Serving on the Board has allowed me the opportunity to repay Morehouse for all it has done for me and to play a role in moving the College to the next level so that it will be more impactful and successful in its mission of educating Black men for another 150 years, building on the rich and strong legacy that it already has.
WHO FROM THE MOREHOUSE COMMUNITY HAS IMPRESSED OR IMPACTED YOUR LIFE OR WORK?
The most impactful group for me has been the many successful and well accomplished alumni in almost every field you can think of-business, medicine, education, religion, politics, and law. I am always amazed by the impact that Morehouse Men have had across the world given its small size. If I am looking for a connection inside of an organization or for specific subject matter advice or just a friendly connection in a city I am traveling to, I can always count on there being a Morehouse Man in a position to assist. The alumni that have had the biggest impact on me have been our historical civil rights leaders-Martin Luther King, Jr., Julian Bond, and Maynard Jackson just to name a few. These Morehouse Men truly in many respects were the game changers for Black people in this country and society at large of making America a better and more equitable place despite still having a long ways to go.
AS A TRUSTEE, HOW DO YOU HOPE TO IMPACT MOREHOUSE COLLEGE?
I hope that my experiences in business building, leadership and strategic thinking will help build and shape the Morehouse of the future. This includes a larger endowment, best in class academic program and faculty, much improved technology infrastructure, new and improved facilities, reaching greater student populations and the best in student experience and support.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BOOK, MOVIE AND/OR TV SHOW OF ALL TIME?
Have lots of favorite movies. A couple of Eddie Murphy classics -Boomerang and Coming to America. A few Christmas classics-Scrooge, It’s A Wonderful Life and the Grinch. However, my favorite movie of all time is probably The Godfather.
