About the Institute
The Public Health Sciences Institute is committed to supporting and training students to diversify the public health workforce by producing culturally competent, well-trained minority students. As a result of this commitment, PHSI was created under a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1988.
Since its establishment, PHSI has had a large impact on students, especially those in the AUC. The number of AUC students attending graduate school in public health has tripled during the last ten years. The vast majority of these students have participated in one or more PHSI’s highly successful programs. Our programs, along with activities that provide career counseling and increase career awareness, constitute a solid core on which students can build a career in public health.
The Atlanta University Center Public Health Association
PHSI supports the AUC Public Health Association, a student led organization that supports extracurricular public health related activities. This student organization is chartered on the campuses of Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University.
Members of the AUC PHA organize trips to programs/schools and agencies focusing on public health, sponsor interdisciplinary seminars, offer workshops on current public health issues, and participate in numerous community service projects (e.g., World AIDS Day, Cancer Walk, AIDS Walk, etc). Members of the AUC PHA, in conjunction with PHSI, provide quality programming throughout the academic year to increase campus awareness of PHSI, public health issues, attract students to the minor in public health and choose public health careers.
