    • About Us

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP)

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) administers awards issued by government agencies and other institutions of higher education for sponsored research, programs, and projects. The mission of ORSP is to support the Morehouse community by developing and maintaining the infrastructure needed to support the research and training activities of the College, developing the institutional capabilities for research and public service, identifying sources of support for sponsored projects, developing, and implementing training programs for proposal writing, developing institutional policies that relate to sponsored activities, assisting with the proposal development.

For all sponsored projects, Morehouse College is the official awardee and retains the overall responsibility for award administration. Therefore, all proposals for external funding must be approved by the institution prior to submission to a funding agency. The Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible for the design, integrity, execution, administration and reporting of the sponsored project and acts as a representative of the institution. PIs cannot enter into binding agreements for sponsored projects without institutional approval.

Morehouse College is a member of the Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP), a cooperative initiative among federal agencies and institutional recipients of federal funds to reduce the administrative burden associated with research grants and contracts. The Morehouse College FDP profile contains publicly available data, including general institutional information, audit reports, rate agreements, contacts, registrations, certifications, and assurances.

Institutional information for grant administration may also be found on the Morehouse College Fact Sheet.

HUMAN SUBJECT RESEARCH /INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB)

The Morehouse College Institutional Review Board (IRB) ensures that the institution remains in compliance with federal government regulations concerning the Responsible Conduct of Research – Protection of Human Subjects, 45 CFR, part 46. All investigators, including students, desiring to conduct research at Morehouse involving the use of human subjects are required to complete Human Subject Research training and obtain approval from the IRB prior to initiating any research activity.

Human subject research is any study involving human subjects, including survey questionnaires. All human subject studies are subject to IRB review regardless of the purpose, extent, context, or source of funding for the study. Research initially undertaken without the intent of using human subjects, but later proposes to do so, must comply with these procedures.

The Morehouse IRB reviews research conducted by our faculty, staff, students, and outside researchers. All researchers must show proof of human subjects research training. Researchers from other institutions wishing to conduct studies on students, faculty or staff at Morehouse College must submit an application to the Morehouse College IRB even if an IRB review was completed at their home institution (in accordance with Protection of Human Subjects, 45 CFR 46, part 46.114).

Use the appropriate application to submit your request for IRB approval prior to undertaking the planned study:

Applicants should allow at least four weeks for review.

    IRB CO-CHAIRS:

    • Nathan Nobis, Associate Professor of Philosophy
    • Chris Markham, Associate Professor of Psychology
