Bio
Mikki Harris an associate professor in the Journalism in Sports, Culture, and Social Justice Department at Morehouse College.
Mikki K. Harris uses a journalistic approach to understanding the context of humanity, both past and present through innovative visual storytelling. She is a multimedia journalist whose work over the past 20 years has focused on using innovation and storytelling to reach audiences, shift perspectives, and build understanding. She uses oral history, documentary photojournalism and video, as well as writing to document and shape stories of impact.
A Spelman College graduate with a bachelor's degree in economics, and a master’s degree in journalism from Boston University, Mikki first worked as a technology consultant for Accenture, building her skills in solutions-driven work. She carried her interest in tech when she shifted into journalism, becoming a digital photojournalist and multimedia storyteller. She has served as a Visual Journalism Fellow at the Poynter Institute, has photographed six of the past eight US Presidents, and has worked as a photojournalist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, USA Today and the Newark Star-Ledger. Two of her images illustrating life in Harlem were exhibited at The Studio Museum in Harlem, NY in 2005, and her images of The National Urban League are a part of Google's Arts and Culture digital exhibit. Two student investigative reporting magazines that Mikki taught the visuals for and edited, won the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and her article in National Geographic was printed in The Best American Science and Nature Writing edited volume in 2022.
Mikki uses advances in the tech space to inform her of work as a journalist and educator. She became a certified drone pilot in 2019 and founded the Atlanta Drone Lab. Her research includes producing stories and expanding understanding through the use of technology that includes Virtual Reality and Graphical Information System (GIS) platforms. Mikki lectures on technology’s role, develops STEM curriculum, and is a digital media and visual innovation Associate Professor of Journalism at Morehouse College.
