About Dr. Haile Larebo
Haile M. Larebo earned his PhD in history from the School of Oriental and African Studies of University of London, specializing in the history of Africa with emphasis on Italian colonial history.
Dr. Haile M. Larebo holds a PhD in history from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, focusing on African history with a specialization in Italian colonial history. His academic journey also includes a B.D and STL from Angelicum University in Rome, Italy, and an MPhil in history and philosophy of religion from Kings College, London, UK. Haile is a professor of history at Morehouse College and has been teaching the History of Africa alongside with World History and Western Civilization
since 1991.
Haile earned his PhD in history from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, specializing in African history with a focus on Italian colonial history. He also holds a B.D and STL from Angelicum University in Rome, Italy, and an MPhil in history and philosophy of religion from Kings College, London, UK. Since 1991, Haile has been a professor of history at Morehouse College, where he teaches courses on African History, World History, and Western Civilization.
Haile's seminal publication, "The Building of an Empire: Italian Land Policy and Practice in Ethiopia, 1935-1941," published by Clarendon Press Oxford University Press in 1994, has been widely acclaimed for its contribution to the study of Italo-Ethiopian relations and was awarded the 1996 AHA's Howard Marraro Prize.
In addition to his magnum opus, Haile has authored various articles and presented academic discussions on Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa at national and international conferences, solidifying his reputation as a highly respected authority in his field.
Haile's academic achievements have been recognized through grants and fellowships, including the USA Ambassador Distinguished Scholar, the UNCF Mellon Program Faculty Residency Fellowship, and support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has also held a senior fellowship at the National Humanities Center in North Carolina. In 2021, he received the Recognition Letter of Accomplished Scholarship and Service Award from the University of Gondar, following his tenure as a
Distinguished Visiting Scholar in 2019.
Beyond academia, Haile has made significant contributions as a public intellectual, publishing articles and appearing as a guest commentator, interviewee, and keynote speaker on various media platforms such as BBC, Deutsche Welle, History Channel, Sputnik International, Voice of America, as well as Ethiopian satellite TV and radio stations. His insights on African affairs, particularly concerning Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, resonate within various community and political organizations, as well as
news and social media platforms.
In 2019, the esteemed blog EthioSemay spotlighted Haile as one of the top four Ethiopians of the Year, underscoring his enduring impact and influence. Additionally, following, what the audience defined as the groundbreaking three-hour interview on the history of the Horn of Africa with the then Ethiopia's most popular Satellite and Radio Television channel, ESAT, in 2017, he was hailed as the foremost among the three most controversial and talked-about personalities of the month, further solidifying his status as an expert in the field of academia and public discourse alike.
