Why Black Male Educators Matter
Representation in the classroom matters. The presence of just one Black male educator can transform the trajectory of Black students, increasing their likelihood of graduating, enrolling in college, and succeeding academically. These findings emphasize the urgent need to recruit and support Black male teachers to inspire and guide the next generation.
WHY I AM PURSUING A CAREER IN EDUCATION
“I’ve discovered through research that having a Black male teacher in the classroom impacts student outcomes in a variety of ways, including academically and socially. I want my presence to make a difference. ”
Joshua Porter | Senior, Class of 2025
“My dream is to inspire students by serving as a role model of their potential. I want students I work with to embrace being their authentic selves in educational settings and beyond. ”
G’Khyri C. Patterson | Senior, Class of 2025
“Working with MCEE has enlightened me to the fact that education encompasses more than teaching in a classroom; it is an intersectional field which includes school leaders, policymakers, artists, counselors, researchers, architects, psychologists, and more. ”
Letrell Harris | Graduate, Class of 2020

Belonging Beyond Brown Documentary
Belonging Beyond Brown explores the emotional stories of displacement, resilience, and the enduring quest for justice experienced by Black educators and students after the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling. Through intimate interviews and historical footage, the film delves into the personal struggles and triumphs of students, families, and educators as they navigated the challenges of desegregation. It highlights the emotional toll of forced integration, while celebrating the strength and persistence of Black communities. By drawing parallels between the past and present, Belonging Beyond Brown reveals how the legacy of Brown continues to shape today's fight for racial justice and inclusive education, making these stories as relevant now as they were decades ago.
