About Our Study Abroad Program

Program Types
PROGRAM TYPES
Direct Programs
- Experiences provided by one of our five external partners. Available in the fall, spring, and summer term. These programs can range from a few weeks to a full semester. You may have the opportunity to intern or volunteer while abroad. Externally funded scholarships may be used to fund direct programs. Institutional scholarships may not be used to towards direct programs.
Exchange Programs
- Experience provided by the ISEP Exchange Program. A student pays Morehouse to receive the same accommodations at their institution abroad. You must live on campus and have an unlimited meal plan to be eligible. Both institutional and external scholarships may be applied to an exchange program. Currently, exchange programs are only available in the spring semester.
Faculty-Led Programs
- Short-term programs led by faculty. They may be credit-bearing. These trips range from 1-4 weeks. Faculty-led programs often occur during school breaks, including J-Mester, spring break, and summer.

How to Study Abroad for a Semester

Getting Started
1. Attend a Study Abroad Information Session (every Wednesday at 3 pm in Massey, 440)
- Apply for passport, if necessary (please take into consideration that processing times may range from 7-13 weeks)
- If you are a first time passport applicant, take advantage of the Delta Airlines Passport Assistance Program for $165 reimbursement of your fees
- Schedule an academic advising appointment
- Research programs that interest you and the courses that are offered
- Schedule appointment with academic advisor to create an academic plan aligned with your degree plan (courses, degree plan)
3. Research and choose your preferred programs
- Identify your top two choices
- Keep in mind that exchange programs are only available in the spring semester
- Schedule an appointment with a peer advisor to help narrow down your program choices
- Schedule an OIE advising appointment to solidify your first and second program choices
- For semester (direct and exchange programs) schedule with Ms. Nandi Musengwa
- Complete applications on Study Abroad Portal by the OIE deadlines
Spring 2025 Deadline: October 3, 2024
- Apply through Morehouse via Study Abroad Portal- ensure status shows “Application Submitted”
- Apply through external providers
- Apply for scholarships (including, but not limited to The Benjamin A Gilman Scholarship, Andrew Young Fund for International Scholars, Fund for Education Abroad)
Post Submission
6. Commit to program- Within the Study Abroad Portal
- Through external providers
- Explore visa and documentation requirements
- If you have questions, please reach out to your external provider
- Secure academic course approvals
- Get courses approved by department chairs for each academic discipline related to courses taken abroad using this form
- Upload list of approved courses to the Study Abroad Portal
- Fill out the Study Abroad Financial Aid Verification Form and submit it to the Financial Aid Office (fall and spring semester only)
- Once the form is returned to you by Financial Aid, upload to your Study Abroad Portal
- Consult residence life regarding current and future housing needs (fall and spring semester only)
11. Review travel health information and complete health travel clearance forms (fall and spring semester only)
- Upload on Point and Click
- Email Ms. Brittany Talbott at btalbott@msm.edu to confirm submission
13. Familiarize yourself with your destination country
Pre-Departure
14. Attend all OIE Pre-Departure Orientation/workshops
- Join OIE WhatsApp group to share arrival confirmation, pictures/videos and ask questions
- Upload final travel itinerary to Study Abroad Portal
16. Enroll in Smart Travelers Enrollment Program (STEP) and review traveler safety guidelines, and travelers’ health information
Post-Program
17. Notify OIE of safe return from program (via oie@morehouse.edu and/or WhatsApp group)
18. Share study abroad photos or videos for OIE promotion
19. Complete OIE post-program evaluation on the Study Abroad Portal
20. Share your experience and become an OIE Ambassador!
Notes:
- The earlier you begin the process, the better!
- Students may not select or apply to semester-long study abroad programs that are not on the College's approved list (see Program Discovery tab for more information)
- Please complete your application thoroughly and accurately to avoid any delays in the process. Please review the instructional guide for searching programs and completing an application, here.
- Application deadline for external providers may differ from the Morehouse application deadline. Be sure to complete both applications by the appropriate dates.
- Exchange programs are only available for the spring semester. Spaces are limited and acceptance is highly competitive.
- This process differs slightly in the summer term. Explore the summer workflow here.

How to Study Abroad on a Faculty-Led Trip
Getting Started
1. Attend a Study Abroad Information Session- Every Wednesday at 3 pm in Massey, 440
2. Ensure you have a valid passport
- Apply for a passport, if necessary (please take into consideration that processing times may range from 7-13 weeks)
- If you are a first time passport applicant, take advantage of the Delta Airlines Passport Assistance Program for $165 reimbursement of your fees
- Create a financial plan to fund your program
- Consider if your program qualifies for the Andrew Young Fund for International Scholars
- Make a savings plan, consider creating a GoFundMe, and if a program is credit-bearing, inquire about using financial aid resources
- If necessary, schedule a faculty-led study abroad advising appointment with Ms. Jeanine White
- Attend any interest meetings held by the program leader for more information about the experience
- Complete applications on the Study Abroad Portal by stated deadline
- You may apply for up to three programs per application cycle
- Apply for scholarships
- For eligible trips, apply to the Andrew Young Fund for International Scholars to receive up to $2,400 to go toward your program fees
- Apply for external scholarships (including, but not limited to the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship and the Fund for Education Abroad)
Post Submission
7. Commit to program within the Study Abroad Portal- If you are participating in a credit-bearing program, register for the required classes
- Pay program deposit and all subsequent payments to secure your spot
9. Obtain health clearance by deadline (you will be notified of deadline by Ms. White)
- Fill out health forms
- Upload immunization records to Point and Click Patient Portal
- Email Ms. Brittany Talbott (btalbott@msm.edu) to notify her of each immunization record upload (this is essential!)
- Vaccines to Go drives may be available for you to obtain required travel vaccinations
- Complete all post-decision acknowledgements
NOTE: All post-submission tasks must be completed by given deadline, or your spot on the trip will be forfeited
Pre-Departure
11. Attend your program leader’s pre-departure sessions
12. Complete OIE’s Pre-Study Abroad Self-Assessment
13. Share travel itinerary with family and friends
14. Print out copy of your iNext travel insurance card and download it on your phone for quick reference
15. Read the Traveler Safety Document and review the Country Handbook of your destination
While Abroad
16. Share your program pictures and videos! The OIE would love to promote your experience
17. Carefully guard your passport and other valuables at all times
Post-Program
18. Complete the post-program survey (will be generated within a week of your return)
19. Ensure all post-program assignments have been completed
20. Share your experiences with your brothers!

Passport Reimbursement Program
Need a passport? Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing, you are eligible for a $165 reimbursement of your passport fees. Simply apply for your passport (more information here), then submit your reimbursement application here.
Study Abroad Advising
For semester programs, schedule with Ms. Nandi Musengwa. For faculty-led programs, schedule with Ms. Jeanine White.

How to Request Advising
Before requesting an advising appointment, be sure to attend a Study Abroad Info Session. Sessions are held every Wednesday at 3 pm in Leadership, Room 440 and on Zoom.
Professional staff advising
Once you have narrowed down your preferred programs, schedule an advising appointment at the Office of International Education. Appointments can be made virtually and in person. Please schedule with an advisor based on which type of program you are exploring (partner program, exchange, faculty-led).
