About the Professor
Ulrica Wilson is a mathematician specializing in the theory of noncommutative rings and in the combinatorics of matrices.
She is an associate professor at Morehouse College, associate director of diversity and outreach at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), and a former vice president of the National Association of Mathematicians.
Dr. Wilson was named the institution’s Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award winner in 2016. Established by the Vulcan Materials Company and co-sponsored by the Georgia Independent Colleges Association, the award goes to an outstanding professor who demonstrates strong academic skills in the classroom and provides leadership and support in other areas of campus life.
She has received a number of additional awards, grants and fellowships during her teaching career, including fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson, Ford and Irvine Foundations. She was also recognized as a Mathematically Gifted and Black Black History Month honoree in 2017 and won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring in 2018.
Wilson was also named a Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) Fellow in 2019, an honor which recognizes members who have demonstrated a sustained commitment to the support and advancement of women in the mathematical sciences, consistent with the AWM mission: “to create a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavors, and to promote equitable opportunity and treatment of women and others of marginalized genders and gender identities across the mathematical sciences.”
Wilson has spearheaded work on grants designed to help Morehouse students get into graduate programs. She has mentored students as they complete their own research, and has served on curriculum committees, tirelessly working to make sure students get the academic support they need.
Wilson also organizes an annual workshop to provide faculty participants from around the country on best practices for supervising undergraduate research projects. She also co-directs a program that prepares women for
doctoral study and mentors them towards success in graduate school and in their careers. In addition, she has served as a co-director for the Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education program.
