    About Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado

    DR. KARCHEIK SIMS-ALVARADO IS A PIONEERING LEADER IN REVOLUTIONIZING PUBLIC HISTORY AND USING EMPIRICAL DATA TO MEASURE RACIAL DISPARITY.

    Dr. Sims-Alvarado serves as Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and the Director of Public History and Historic Preservation at Morehouse College.

     Sims-Alvarado-Atl_Civil_RightsShe is the author of Atlanta and the Civil Rights Movement, 1944-1968 and Georgia and the Power of the Vote.

    She has served as the chief historical advisor and exhibition designer for various museums: the Nobel Peace Prize Museum in Sweden, TIME magazine’s virtual reality exhibit, The March on Washington, and the upcoming AI exhibition, Women, Soul of the Nation to be presented at the King Center in 2025. 

    Dr. Sims-Alvarado is currently working to preserve the historic homes of Grace Towns Hamilton and George Towns in Atlanta, and the residence of W.E.B. Du Bois in Accra, Ghana. 

    She has recorded more than 100 oral history interviews of civil rights leaders associated with the 1963 March on Washington, SNCC, SCLC, and Freedom Riders, and the residence of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mrs. Coretta Scott King. 

    In addition to being a former National Endowment for the Humanities fellow with the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University, she was awarded the Harvard University Derek Pok Public Service Award in 2024. 

    Currently, Dr. Sims-Alvarado serves as the historian for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Estate, Chair of the Fulton County Reparations Task Force, and CEO of Preserve of Blacks Atlanta, Inc.
