    Understanding GAP Funding

    What is GAP funding?

graduates-1GAP funding is money provided by Morehouse to help “fill the gap” when you and your family have already used other financial aid options (like federal aid, state aid, and outside scholarships), but a balance remains on your account. It is designed to make sure your bill is covered so you can stay enrolled.

    Examples of GAP funds include:

    • General Restricted Scholarship Fund
    • General Education Board
    • Other Donors (Donor)
    • General Endowed Scholarship Fund
    • Founder’s Day Gala Scholarship Fund
    • B.E. Mays Endowed Scholarship Fund
    • Mabel Lindsay Gillespie ESF
    • Special Scholarship Fund
    • Endowment Matching Fund
    • Board of Trustee Opportunity Fund
    Important things to know
    1. GAP funds are non-renewable and non-refundable.
      • This means GAP funds are not guaranteed in future years.
      • If your account shows a credit (extra money) because of GAP funds, that amount will be reduced so that it only covers your charges. You will not receive the extra back as a refund.
    2. GAP funding may be reduced if you receive other awards.
      • If you receive outside scholarships, grants, loans, or make personal payments after GAP funds are applied, your GAP award will be reduced by that same amount.
      • Again, you will not get a refund from GAP funds.

    Why is this the case?
GAP funding is awarded only to cover your remaining balance. Without it, you would still owe that amount. If you later bring in additional money (through scholarships or payments), we adjust the GAP funds so that they can be used to help another Morehouse student in need, just as they helped you.

    Planning ahead

Because GAP funds are not guaranteed each year, it’s important for you and your family to plan for future semesters by seeking outside scholarships and resources.

We hope this helps you better understand GAP funding and why refunds are not issued from it. If you have any questions, please reach out to our office, we’re here to help.
