Meriwether/Talbot Upward Bound Program
Succeed in your higher education pursuits.
The Morehouse College Meriwether/Talbot Upward Bound Program serves 74 eligible students enrolled in target high schools in Meriwether and Talbot counties. The program enhances study habits and collaborative skills for those potential students who need assistance. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income first-generation families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree. Upward Bound’s goal is to increase the number of participants who completed secondary education and enrolled in and graduated from institutions of postsecondary education.
Mission
Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to develop those skills necessary for success in post-secondary education. The program at Morehouse College provides 74 students from Meriwether/Talbot counties. Students representing diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds with the following opportunities:
- Experience academic and personal growth through an intellectual challenge
- Explore career options and possible college majors by visiting corporations and university/college campuses
- Develop self-management and leadership skills
- Attend cultural and recreational activities
The program also assists in college admissions, financial aid, scholarship, and standardized test preparation processes.
Philosophy
Students and staff of the Upward Bound Program believe that motivation is the prerequisite for learning. Consequently, Upward Bound doesn’t just teach to, but instead “turns on” students to the real world. Upward Bound seeks to use each student’s strengths with the hope that they will discover the values of education and themselves.
Vision
The Upward Bound Program encourages participants in a highly motivational, experiential curriculum promoting cross-cultural understanding and global awareness by applying intensive language development, computer technology, visual art, and social science instruction. The summer residential component will provide a nurturing learning environment that stresses a holistic concern for the students’ social, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual well-being.
