    Upward Bound Math Science State Center

    Helping students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math & science.

    The Morehouse College Upward Bound Math/Science State Center (UBMS) serves 63 eligible students currently enrolled in our target schools and high schools throughout the state of Georgia.

    Target schools:

    • Greene County High School
    • Colquitt County High School
    • Hancock Central High School
    • Dooly County High School
    • Mitchell County High School
    • Stewart County High School

    The program provides an intensive six-week residential summer curriculum; year-round counseling and advisement; exposure to University Faculty Members; and participant-conducted scientific research under the guidance of faculty members and/or graduate students.

    The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math & science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science and ultimately careers in the math and science professions.

      Program Goals and Objectives

      Academic Performance (GPA)
      Participants served during the project year will have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a four-point scale at the end of the school year.

      Academic Performance (Standardized Tests)
      Upward Bound Math and Science State Center seniors served during the project year will have achieved at the proficient level on state assessments in reading/language arts and math.

      Secondary School Retention and Graduation (With Regular Secondary School Diploma)
      Upward Bound Math and Science State Center participants served during the project year will continue in school for the next academic year, at the next grade level, or will have graduated from secondary school with a regular secondary school diploma.

      Secondary School Graduation (Rigorous Secondary School Program of Study)
      All current and prior year Upward Bound Math and Science State Center participants, who at the time of entrance into the project had an expected high school graduation date in the school year, will complete a rigorous secondary school program of study and graduate with a regular secondary school diploma

      Postsecondary Enrollment
      All current and prior Upward Bound Math and Science State Center participants, who, at the time of entrance into the program has an expected high school graduation date in the school year, will enroll in a program of postsecondary education by the fall term immediately following high school graduation or will have received notification, by the fall term immediately following high school, from an institution of higher education, of acceptance but deferred enrollment until the net academic semester (e.g., spring semester).

      Postsecondary Completion
      Participants, who enrolled in a program of postsecondary education by the fall term immediately following his school graduation or by the next academic term (e.g., spring term) as a result of acceptance but deferred enrollment, will attain either an associate or bachelor’s degree within six years following graduation from high school.

      Highly motivated, disciplined, and hardworking students who are:

      • U.S. citizens or permanent legal U.S. residents.
      • Rising 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students in the state of GA.
      • Must be first-generation college students with demonstrated financial need
      • Are in good academic standing (2.5 GPA or higher).
      • Intend to pursue a four-year college degree.
