Strengthening the Black Male Teacher Pipeline
We Cultivate and Prepare World-Class Educators
Strengthening the Black Male Teacher Pipeline: Our mission is to empower Black male educators and equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the classroom. As a partner to the Morehouse Education Department, MCEE offers a comprehensive academic program designed to dramatically increase the number of graduates prepared to become exceptional teachers.
In alignment with this mission, the Morehouse Education Department offers several degree programs designed to prepare students for impactful careers in education:
- B.A. Education Studies: The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education Studies program is designed for students who want to contribute to a more equitable and just society through the field of education.
- B.A. Elementary Education: Students who compete the Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education will be eligible for certification and prepared to teach in grades PreK-5.
- Secondary Education: Students who aspire to teach Biology or Computer Science at the middle and/or high school levels (grades 6-12) can pursue a Major in Secondary Education by taking seven required education courses and completing a content area major in Biology or Computer Science.

Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice
At MCEE, we believe that true educational excellence requires a seamless integration of theory and practice. By providing students with practical, hands-on experiences and exposure to diverse educational environments, we equip them with the tools and skills needed to navigate the complexities of the modern classroom.
Our programs foster personal and professional growth and offer opportunities for students to engage in knowledge-generating activities that have a real-world impact. Through this holistic approach, we are preparing the next generation of educators to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their students.
- The Laboratory School: The Lab School Initiative serves as a catalyst for ongoing research and professional development for students and faculty. The MCEE team and Education Department faculty collaborate with partnering schools like Utopian Academy for the Arts to conduct studies on effective teaching strategies, the use of instructional technology, and other culturally relevant approaches in education. This collaborative research enables practitioners to engage in the inquiry process and provides opportunities for all participants to contribute valuable insights to the broader field of education.
- CANDLE Lecture: The CANDLE Lecture is a cornerstone of our commitment to bridging the gap between theory and practice in education. This series brings together exceptional thinkers, creators, and scholars whose groundbreaking work is shaping the future of learning.

Building Communities of Practice, Inquiry, and Belonging
Drawing on Morehouse College's legacy of producing exceptional leaders, MCEE is committed to empowering aspiring educators with the training, mentorship, and resources they need to succeed. Our programs are designed to nurture their growth as transformative leaders in the educational landscape.
Through thought-provoking events and research forums, we celebrate the achievements of our alumni and amplify the voices of Black thought leaders. By fostering a sense of belonging and community, we create a supportive environment where educators can learn, grow, and make a lasting impact.
- Aspiring Principals Program: The MCEE Aspiring Principals Program is a groundbreaking partnership between the Morehouse Center for Excellence in Education, New Leaders, and Clark Atlanta University. This highly selective fellowship is designed to identify and nurture the next generation of exceptional school leaders, with a particular focus on educators of color.
Through a rigorous recruitment and admissions process, the program selects talented individuals who possess the potential to transform educational outcomes. By leveraging the expertise and resources of our three partner institutions, we provide participants with a comprehensive and transformative experience that equips them with the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to excel in leadership roles.
- The Impact of a Morehouse Educator (T.I.M.E} The T.I.M.E Project is a comprehensive initiative dedicated to honoring and tracking the extraordinary educational achievements of Morehouse College alumni. Since our founding in 1867, Morehouse Men have made a profound impact on education worldwide, serving in diverse roles from classroom teachers to school administrators. The T.I.M.E Project aims to quantify this legacy by gathering data on our alumni's educational contributions, from their work in K-12 schools and higher education institutions to their leadership in youth-serving organizations. By documenting the breadth and depth of our alumni's educational accomplishments, we can showcase the enduring influence of Morehouse College on the field of education.
- My Brother’s Teacher Program: To help eliminate feelings of professional and personal isolation often faced by Black male students, teachers, and leaders, MBT knits together a supportive inter-generational community of aspiring and current practitioners. Undergraduate and high school students who are interested in a career in education receive mentoring, tutoring, and advising to ensure each student has an academic and personal accountability partner. MBT also provides opportunities for the professional and personal development of pre-service, novice, and veteran educators.

We Make an Impact
Our programs equip students with a deep understanding of the policies, practices, agencies, and systems that shape education. By connecting students with Morehouse alumni serving in various roles across the education ecosystem, we provide them with invaluable insights and opportunities.
Our goal is to prepare graduates to become advocates for evidence-based reforms, champions of educational equity, and effective leaders who can navigate the education system to drive positive change for students and communities.

Fostering Collaboration and Innovation in Education
The Morehouse Center for Excellence in Education (MCEE) is proud to present the Collective Commons initiative, a dynamic hub designed to spark collaboration, innovation, and scholarly engagement among students, faculty, and education stakeholders. Collective Commons is more than just a physical space – it's a movement. We aim to break down traditional hierarchies in education by fostering democratic participation in a variety of programs and activities.
Three key components make up the Collective Commons:
- Community Commons@Morehouse: This exciting feature serves as a publishing hub, hosting events like the annual colloquium and the renowned CANDLE Lecture.
- Creative Commons@Morehouse: This component fosters the development of innovative educational ideas, concepts, and products. Morehouse students and faculty will have the opportunity to design and pilot these creations, with the goal of improving educational experiences and outcomes for African American students. Expect to see children's books, apps, culturally relevant curricula, the Torch Touch Podcast, and other exciting materials emerge from Creative Commons.
- Classroom Commons@Morehouse: This space serves as a model for 21st-century teaching and learning. Here, educators can gain inspiration to transform their own classrooms into dynamic hubs of student engagement. Education students will also benefit from experiential learning opportunities, interacting with cutting-edge equipment, materials, and products developed within the Collective Commons Initiative.

Torch Talk Podcast
The Torch Talk Podcast initiative is a platform dedicated to raising awareness through community dialogue. Topics range from social justice and current events in education and society to conversations about the policies, practices and philosophies that impact the achievement and progress of Black students. Torch Talk episodes include in-depth interviews with students, educators, national thought leaders, scholars and influencers to shed light on pressing issues, engage in insightful discussions that inspire action and spark meaningful change.
