Branded Merchandise & Licensing
Promoting & Protecting the Morehouse Name
The Morehouse College name, seal, logos, and marks are more than symbols. They represent over 150 years of history, achievement, and global leadership in higher education. To preserve the integrity of our brand and ensure that all products carrying the Morehouse identity reflect our standards, all individuals and organizations must become officially licensed vendors before producing any merchandise featuring the College’s trademarks.
Why Licensing Matters
Being a licensee of Morehouse College trademarks is not only a requirement—it’s a responsibility. It is essential for these reasons:
- Brand Protection: Licensing ensures that the Morehouse name, image, and likeness are used with respect, accuracy, and consistency across all products and materials.
- Quality Assurance: Licensed vendors must meet quality standards so that all merchandise upholds the excellence associated with Morehouse.
- Consumer Confidence: Students, alumni, and supporters can trust that licensed products are authentic and directly connected to the College.
- Equity & Fairness: Licensing creates a level playing field where all vendors follow the same process and guidelines.
- Legal Compliance: Unauthorized use of trademarks is prohibited by federal law and College policy. Licensing helps prevent infringement, misuse, and appropriation of the Morehouse image for personal gain.
- Institutional Support: A portion of proceeds from licensed merchandise directly benefits Morehouse programs, scholarships, and student success.
Before You Produce, Get Licensed
No matter the size of your business or the scale of your idea, if you wish to create products in the name of Morehouse College, you must first secure authorization through the licensing process. This step protects you as a vendor, protects the College, and ensures that our brand remains a powerful and respected emblem worldwide.

“SpelHouse” Trademark
Morehouse College and Spelman College have successfully secured trademark protection for the wordmark, “SpelHouse.” This wordmark is now officially registered and recognized as the exclusive intellectual property of both Morehouse College and Spelman College. This important milestone reinforces both Morehouse and Spelman’s ongoing commitment to brand integrity, consistency, and the protection of the creative assets that define their identity in the marketplace.
The SpelHouse wordmark uses a different license than standard Morehouse licenses. To create products with this wordmark, apply for the SpelHouse license and secure approval from both schools in Brand Manager. Please note that an application for the license will not guarantee approval.
Morehouse is excited to embrace the addition of the wordmark SpelHouse to its brand alongside our colleagues at Spelman. Please feel free to direct any questions or concerns to Morehouse’s Office of Strategic Marketing & Communications at brand@morehouse.edu.

How to Become a Licensee
CLC has two different types of licensing agreements: internal and retail. Both agreements require an application fee, and each has additional costs, as explained below.
Application Fees
The fee for the application is dependent on how many institutions you select; the fee is $250.00 for the first institution and $125.00 for each additional institution, no matter the distribution type(s) selected.
Important Note: The application fee is non-refundable, even if no institutions approve your application.
Types of Licenses
When applying for a university license, it’s important to choose the correct type of license based on how you plan to distribute products. Each license carries specific rights and restrictions. Below is an overview of the two options.
- Internal: If your company is producing product(s) specifically for a university's internal departments, you would select the Restricted distribution channel on the application. By selecting only the restricted channel, your company will not be granted ANY retail distribution rights. This type of license does not allow your company to produce product(s) to sell to retailers, directly to consumers, or in the bookstore. You will be required to provide a contact name from the institution(s) you are applying to if selecting this distribution channel.
- Retail: The Retail license is designed for a company that is seeking to produce and sell products that bear the marks of the institution(s) to retailers and consumers. Most retail agreements require advance royalty payments to be made before the execution of the licensing agreement.
If your company wishes to apply for both internal and retail rights on a single application, you must select both restricted and retail distribution channels.
Phase II
If your application is approved by at least one institution (conceptual approval), your company will move to Phase II of the licensing process.
Upon conceptual approval, the College may have specific requirements that must be completed before an agreement is sent. These typically include pre-ordering holograms, proof of insurance, and affiliation with a fair labor organization. Institutions also have their own set of royalty rates and advance fees, which must be paid before an agreement is executed. An invoice for any fees due will be sent prior to the signing of the agreement. Your additional requirements will be shared during Phase II of the application process, pending approval of your application by the College.
Disapproval: If your application is denied by the College, it will be moved to inactive status. You must submit a new application should your company want to reapply in the future. As noted earlier, the application fee is non-refundable.
Insurance Requirement
CLC requires a standard insurance policy for all licensees. Please forward the attached insurance requirements to your/an insurance agent to get quotes. The cost of business liability insurance is the most common reason why companies do not finish the licensing process. DO NOT purchase an insurance policy until you are notified of application approval, and you are moved to Phase II. CLC will not refund the cost of an insurance policy if your application is disapproved. Please be aware that certain products, such as consumables and PPE, require higher insurance coverage. If this is required for your license, you will be notified once in Phase II.
