    About the Professor

Dr. Matthew Platt studies the policy consequences of strategies for black liberation.

Platt is an associate professor of political science. He teaches courses on American politics, Congress, and undergraduate research methods. The bulk of Platt’s research focuses on Black agenda setting—how do you get Congress to pay attention to Black issues? He is writing a book manuscript that examines 20th-century Black politics through the lens of bill sponsorship in Congress. He argues that a narrow form of Black political empowerment (more Black faces in high places) undermined efforts at achieving Black liberation.
