    Writing to Learn

    May 29, 2025

Orwell quoteIn a world dominated by digital communication, writing remains a fundamental skill that shapes our personal and professional lives.

    Writing to Learn (WTL)

WRITING, the written production of language, is a complex cultural, psycholinguistic, and sociolinguistic process. Writing is a process of deep thinking.

WRITING TO LEARN is a strategy that helps you think deeply about a text by activating background knowledge about a text; it facilitates and records thinking.

Psychology research and learning experts suggest writing things down leads to better learning. Writing enhances learning. Writing helps you retain and memorize information. Writing enables you to monitor what you know: it is an active form of learning. Having excellent writing skills is a predictor of your academic achievement.

Writing to learn promotes content learning; when you write, you think. Writing helps you to understand the subject matter, clarify and organize your thoughts, and improve retention of course content.

Writing to learn allows you to recall, clarify, and question what you know and would like to know about a subject.

Writing can also help you work through confusing new ideas and apply what you learn to your personal and professional life.

Writing-to-learn activities serve to meet primary content synthesis and comprehension goals through writing.

You can schedule an appointment with the Writing Center to improve your writing skills!!! The Writing Center provides writing consultations to ALL Morehouse students. Appointments can be scheduled at morehouse.mywconline.com.
