Morehouse started in a church 156 years ago, and spiritual leadership remains central to the iconic institution. Founder’s Week concludes where it started, with a celebration of the Gospel and perspectives on its relevance today.

Reverend Dr. Rashad Raymond Moore '12
Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Crown Heights

The Reverend Rashad Raymond Moore, Ph.D, currently serves as the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Crown Heights in Brooklyn, New York.

He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, his Master of Divinity in Social Ethics from Union Theological Seminary, and his Master of Philosophy and Ph.D. in Philosophy and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. His doctoral dissertation, titled “My Soul’s Been Anchored: Tradition and Disruptive Imagining in Historically Black Education,” explores the crucial role of tradition and ritual in countering anti-blackness within school discipline, offering a compelling framework for creating experiences through historically Black education. Dr. Moore’s work has been published by the Huffington Post, the Latin American Philosophy of Education Society, and Harvard Education Press.

In addition to his scholarship, Reverend Moore is strongly committed to pastoral ministry and community service. He served as Assistant Minister at The Abyssinian Baptist church in Harlem, New York, under the late Rev. Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Sheltering Arms Children and Family Services, Inc., the United Negro College Fund’s Faith Council, and the Morehouse Manhattan Alumni Association, among other church and community commitments.
