RSO APPLICATION AND RECOGNITION PROCESS

The recognition process is the annual prerequisite for proposed registered student organizations (RSO) and clubs as well as existing student organizations to be recognized by the College to and to receive access to college funds and resources.

Key Information

  1. First-year students are not eligible to apply for charter status.
  2. All RSOs must have two (2) full-time faculty or staff advisors.
  3. RSO presidents are mandated to attend the monthly Presidents Council Meeting.
  4. An advisor is required to attend the advisor training workshop.
  5. Advisors must attend all RSO on-campus events.
  6. At a minimum, each RSO must have executive leadership roles of president, treasurer, and secretary.
  7. All executive leadership members of RSOs must have at least a 2.7 cumulative GPA.
  8. All RSOs must have a membership of at least 10 active members
    • Requirements for active membership must meet the following thresholds:
      • Set up Servant Leader Profile
      • Verified impacts in the Servant Leaders community engagement app for
        •  three (3) general body meetings
        • RSO-hosted community service event
        • two additional events
        • additional requirements set forth by RSO constitution
  9. Organizations will be notified of charter status via the primary contact’s e-mail address.
  10. Pay $20 registration fee to Cashiers Office at the beginning of the fall semester.

 

Registration is due on April 15th.

The Recognition Process

STEPSDESCRIPTION
STEP 1: GETTING STARTED

A new and forming club or organization must have the following to begin the recognition process:

  1. Ten (10) charter members who are currently enrolled students at Morehouse College.
  2. Identify president, treasurer, and secretary.
  3. Two (2) full-time faculty or staff member of Morehouse who is willing to serve as advisors. The primary advisor will serve as the main liaison between the club and Morehouse College.
  4. A proposed constitution for the organization. The organization will need to follow the Constitution Template.
  5. A proposed calendar of executive board meetings and general body meeting schedule.

Once these things are in place, the organization should fill out anApplication for Recognition.

STEP 2: VERIFICATION OF DOCUMENTS

The Department of Student Life staff will verify that the above requirements have been completed. At this time, if an organization requests it, a staff member may grant provisional status to the organization for ten (10) days. Please note the following regarding provisional status:

  • Use of Morehouse facilities is granted when reserved by an officer or advisor for member recruitment or organization meetings only
  • This does not allow the organization to sponsor events, travel to an event as an organization, open an account (on- or off campus), or raise funds

 

STEP 3: ORGANIZATIONAL SUBCOMMITTEE REVIEWThe Department of  Student Life will forward the completed recognition documents first to the Organizational Subcommittee, which is comprised of RSO presidents of the organization category that your proposed organization. This committee will meet within three weeks to make recommendations and comments on the organization’s request for recognition. The Organizational Subcommittee will notify the organization of the meeting at which the group’s constitution will be reviewed. At least one member of the group must be in attendance to answer any questions or to provide further information. The Organizational Subcommittee shall make recommendations for the group to continue through the recognition process.
STEP 4: PRESIDENTS’ COUNCILOnce the Organizational Subcommittee has recommended a group to proceed with the recognition process, the Department of Student Life will forward the recognition documents to the Presidents’ Council to be reviewed. The group’s request for recognition will be added to the agenda of a Presidents’ Council meeting, and at least one member of the group must be present at this meeting.
STEP 5: ASSOCIATE DEAN OF STUDENT LIFE AND LEADERSHIPUpon receipt of recommendations and comments from Org Sub and Presidents’ Council, the Associate Dean of Student Life and Leadership will either grant full recognition, deny recognition, or continue provisional recognition (if an extension is needed). The Associate Dean of Student Life and Leadership will notify the organization and other appropriate offices of the outcome of the organization’s request for recognition.
STEP 6:  MAINTAINING RSO STATUS

With the granting of full recognition, the organization must maintain the following requirements:

  • Maintain an updated organization constitution. Every time the document is revised, a new version must be submitted. Large, structural changes to the document may require Organizational Subcommittee approval.
  • Maintain active membership of at least ten (10) enrolled Men of Morehouse
  • Maintain two (2) full-time faculty or staff member to serve as advisors
  • Uphold all Morehouse College policies
  • Complete annual performance report

HOW WILL MY APPLICATION BE ASSESSED?

All applicants will be assessed on the minimum threshold criteria:

  1. Submission of the completed application by the deadline
  2. Uniqueness of the proposed student organization’s mission and purpose
  3. Identified founding executive board members
  4. Constitution
  5. Proposed E-board members have completed the L.E.A.D. certificate program
  6. Advisors’ acceptance of role and responsibilities

RSO RESPONSIBILITIES

Below are the responsibilities to maintain an active status as an RSO:

  1. Maintain current records of all chartering documents, including a constitution, bylaws, membership list, event calendar, and operating manual in the Servant Leaders community engagement app.
  2. Ensure that activities and programming are listed in the event section of the RSO’s group page in the Servant Leaders student life and leadership app, consistent with the organization charter and adhere to college policies, and procedures.
  3. Host one academic, community service, and a social event each academic year. Collaborations are encouraged.
  4. Host monthly executive board and general body meetings.
  5. Ensure representation at RSO fairs during the fall and spring semesters.
  6. Meet standards of eligibility for participation in student activities as indicated in the Student Handbook.
  7. Complete annual recognition process as established by the Department of Student Life.
  8. All members must complete the Anti-Hazing form.
  9. Submit the annual performance report.
