Updated: March 14, 2020 at 8:15 a.m. ET

The below message was sent originally as an e-mail to Morehouse constituents on March 12.

Clarifications since the original email:

  • All campus events have been canceled
  • Students presently off campus have been instructed to return to campus to collect their belongings in order to check out by Saturday, March 21.

Dear Morehouse College Community,

The Morehouse experience is built on the foundation of brotherhood, scholarship, and leadership in an environment that prioritizes the safety and well-being of everyone in our community. With the novel coronavirus disease reaching pandemic levels, we have made the following decisions effective immediately:

  • Spring Break will be extended by one week to March 20th
  • In-person classes will be moved online beginning March 23rd and will run through to the end of the Spring Semester
  • Residential students who are presently off campus are instructed to make arrangements to return to campus in order to retrieve their belongings and check out of their residences by 9 p.m. on March 21st
  • All college-sponsored travel for faculty, staff and students is suspended
  • Travel related to athletics, club sports and activities is suspended
  • All campus events have been canceled
  • On-campus filming projects have been suspended
  • All campus tours have been suspended
  • All activities related to Admitted Students Day will be going virtual
  • All non-essential staff will work remotely

The extension of Spring Break affords the College time to make the transition to online learning and coordinate moving days for students. It also allows us to further align with other institutions within the Atlanta University Center where many of our students are cross-enrolled.

We will send more specific details and instructions to students, faculty, and staff later in the day and over the next few days. We will err on the side of communicating quickly as this pandemic is very fluid so please stay tuned to your emails, Morehouse.edu, and our social media channels as we will send more information and instruction about the above decisions shortly.

We’ve also developed a form for faculty, staff, and students to register their travel over the break. Completing this form will help us best assess risks moving forward should your destination is classified as Level 3 or 4 areas by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Please complete the form here: https://morehousecollege.formstack.com/forms/travel_registration_form__spring_semester_2020

To our students, we fully understand these actions will disrupt some of the activities and academic ceremonies that are core to the Morehouse experience. However, in light of the spread of this virus, we must prioritize safety and do our part to protect the health of the Morehouse Community.

Sincerely,

David A. Thomas, Ph.D.
President
