Division/Department: Department of Campus Police
Reports To: Lieutenant


The police officer is responsible for issues involving personal safety and security of students, staff, faculty and property of Morehouse and other outside facilities and functions. The officer must be Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council certified and will have the full power of arrest. The officer will enforce state and federal law, as well as Morehouse statutes and regulations.

This position must successfully complete a polygraph assessment, drug screening, physical examination, and criminal background check as part of the selection process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide protection and assistance to persons and property on campus, which includes enforcement of federal and state laws, campus rules, and regulations
  • Respond to, investigate, document, and complete accurate case reports on criminal, non-emergency, emergency incidents, and detailed information and action taken
  • Exercise independent judgment in emergency situations involving danger to life and/or property 
  • Provide security for campus special events, social, and sports events 
  • Work in close cooperation with Morehouse and the immediate community, other law enforcement agencies, mental health, governmental, community, health, emergency, criminal justice, and legal entities 
  • Coordinate with Supervisors regarding goals of department 
  • Any other duties as prescribed by chief of police, their designee or supervisor
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficient verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • A strong work ethic, and the ability to exercise sound judgment at all times
  • Must possess the ability establish and maintain effective working relationship with a diverse campus community
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Must have substantive knowledge of and experience with community policing principles and practices
  • Proficiency in maintenance and use of firearm and proficient with technology
  • Basic operational knowledge of standard office equipment
Education and Experience Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Successful completion of Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.) Basic Law Enforcement Certification is required
  • Minimum of three years of experience of police experience
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license 
  • Positions are also subject to and must successfully pass physical exam and drug test
  • No felony convictions is required
Physical Demands
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, grasping, lifting d carrying, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, use of foot controls, driving, talking, hearing, and seeing 
  • Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects is required
