The Department of Student Development Leadership Team is dedicated and committed to enhancing and enriching each student’s collegiate experience. We are here to facilitate programs, services, and experiences that support the mission and vision of the College, as well as help students develop into leaders. 

Timothy E. Sams
Senior Vice President for Student Development

Dr. Sams oversees a broad range of programs and services to engage students in leadership development and to acclimate them to campus life.  He is the former Vice President for Student Life at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in Troy, NY, where he was responsible for leadership of the student experience.  Prior to RPI he was the Associate Dean of Students at NYU in Abu Dhabi, UAE.  Before that he spent 13 years at Swarthmore College as an Assistant Dean of the College and Director of the Black Cultural Center, and four years at Williams College as the Director of the Multicultural Center. Prior to Williams College, he coordinated Minority Student Services at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, NY. 

Dr. Sams' work in higher education reflects his commitment to student access, success, leadership and social transformation. Originally from Syracuse, New York, he received a B.A from Union College, Schenectady, NY, an M.A. from The State University of New York at Albany, and a Ph.D. from Temple University.  He is the father of two and the husband to Mrs. Frenita Combs-Sams.

Maurice Washington
Associate Vice President for Student Services and Dean of the College

Dean Washington is directly responsible for managing the entities that formulate the Office of the Dean of the College, which include the following units: Career and Professional Development; the First-Year Experience; Housing and Residential Education; International Student Services; Recreation, Intramurals and Fitness; Student Conduct; and Student Life.  In his capacity as AVPSS/DOC, he works to ensure that all matters involving the Morehouse student experience embody everything that one needs and more for holistic development.
