CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

Deadline for Submissions: October 3, 2012

The Faces of Manhood in the 21st Century

68th Annual Family Institute Conference

Masculinities: The Faces of Manhood in the 21st Century Global Context

Call for Presentations: Panels/Paper Presentations/Roundtables

As the theme suggests, this year's conference will focus on the specific issues that may impact contemporary constructions of masculinities (particularly, black masculinities). We are seeking presenters from academia as well as the larger social community to come and present their works at this inclusive conference.  The objective is to leave the conference better informed about the issues of masculinities. This year, the Family Institute Conference, its 68th, is organized around masculinities, sex, sexualities, accountability, dating and relationships, risk-taking behaviors, sexual identity, men ending violence against women, and sexual expressions. Black males have the highest rates of incarceration, highest high school dropout rates, and highest rates of HIV/AIDS, prostate cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and most other maladies. The Family Institute's 68th meeting will mark an important contribution toward solutions to many of these social problems of men, particularly black men.

Topics may cover the breadth of masculinities focusing on definitions and issues of masculinities, sex, sexualities, accountability, dating and relationships, risk-taking behaviors, sexual identity, and sexual expressions. We are particularly interested in work done with college males in understanding the role of men in preventing violence against women. Concerns with homophobia and femiphobia are germane topics. Research and thinking on pedagogy and campus climate are of keen interest for this conference. The conference will be research driven with attention given to the undergraduate student culture and behaviors that encompass many aspects of student life.

We are now accepting abstracts for presentation at this year’s conference.  Presenters DO NOT have to have a completed manuscript to participate as presenters; however, those with completed manuscripts are encouraged and invited to submit their work (all submissions subject to peer review) for publication in a special edition of Challenge, the official journal of the Morehouse Research Institute. Challenge publishes scholarly papers on all issues germane to African American life. Particular emphasis is placed on African American men, their families, and their communities. As the official publication of the Morehouse Research Institute (MRI), Challenge also publishes special issues with papers presented at MRI conferences and invited papers on selected themes. Unsolicited papers related to the themes may also be included in these special issues.

Submit your abstracts by October 3, 2012 for panels, paper presentations, and/or roundtable discussions to: Michael Hodge at drmichaelhodge@me.com or Robert Peterson at rpeterson@morehouse.edu.
