Progressing through the academic pipeline
Assisting low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities.
The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects.
Our TRIO Programs are recognized as a superior system that prepares students for:
- successful completion of secondary education;
- admission into a post-secondary institution;
- retention and completion of post-secondary education;
- and preparation for successful matriculation to a post-baccalaureate program.
The programs identify students who show potential for success and provide encouragement, support, and assistance.

Educational Talent Search Program
The Morehouse College Educational Talent Search Program assists youth with academic potential. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, participants must be first-generation (i.e., neither parent graduated from college) and from a federally eligible low-income household. We provide academic, career, and financial counseling to our students and equip them with the tools and resources to graduate from high school and complete their postsecondary education. Talent Search encourages those who have not completed educational programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to enter or reenter and graduate. We also serve military veterans.
McNair Scholars Program
The Ronald E. McNair program has both a Spelman and Morehouse Scholars Program that encourages low-income and first-generation college students and students from historically underrepresented ethnic groups to expand their educational opportunities by enrolling in a Ph.D. program and ultimately pursuing an academic career. We designed our program specifically for STEM majors. We are a year-round graduate school preparatory program with an eight-week summer research component designed to prepare first-generation undergraduates demonstrating the strong academic potential for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.
